At least five people are dead after flash flooding hit Sierra Leone’s capital at the beginning of this month amid torrential rains. More rain was expected as some residents feared possible mudslides like ones that devastated parts of Freetown two years ago. Serious damage was reported in the West African port city of more than 1 million people as homes and vehicles were swamped.
Flooding and mudslides in Freetown in 2017 killed nearly 500 people, with even more reported missing, leading to Mission Direct relocating our project to help rebuild a school in Regent Village where the mudslide took place.
News of the flash flooding is devastating for a country still in recovery from their last natural disaster. We are asking all of our supporters to keep the people of Freetown in their prayers – including our partners and project in Regent Village.
