Changing the future for favela children

In 2017, Mission Direct added Rio De Janeiro to the portfolio of mission locations for our volunteers and since then, teams have worked in Complexo da Mare, to support CADI (Centre of Assistance & Full Development) to help challenge the culture and belief that ‘drug trafficking is the only way out of poverty for young men & women’ in the favela.

To date, we have constructed a multi-purpose space, helped provide 3 new classrooms and renovated a kitchen and refectory.  In 2021, our project will change and teams will be supporting a children’s project, which provides access to education for primary-school age.

Please note that the trip dates may vary a day either way due to flight availability.

The Projects

In our three years here, our teams have been working in CADI’s community centre, renovating spaces to create new classrooms, toilets and workshops for local children and women looking for new skills – used by over 200 people and growing. We will continue this work into 2020.

In 2021, we’ll change projects to work with ABBA Children’s Project – set up in the middle of a nearby favela to provide education to primary school children who wouldn’t otherwise have access to education. We'll be building new facilities here to support the expansion of this vital work.

No skills are necessary – you’ll be supporting the professionals and there’s always something for everyone to do – from mixing cement, to painting and entertaining the children!

In the afternoons, you will usually visit and support other local projects such as a homeless outreach centre.

This trip is a must if you want to serve the heart of Brazil and help shape the future for some of her children. If you have a specific skill you would like to share with the local community in Brazil, please contact us to discuss how we can bespoke your trip.

Rest and Relaxation

You can't come to Rio without visiting the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, as well as some down-time on the beach and an outing up Sugar Loaf Mountain for some spectacular views.
