What you will be doing

This will be our second team our to The Gambia – a popular tourist destination and a great mission for family groups. Enjoy the gentile culture and slow pace of life on ‘the smiling coast of Africa’, complete with beautiful beaches and a subtropical climate.

Join past MD staff member Linda Lauermann and husband Daniel at House of Skills in Tanji – a small fishing village, working at House of Skills in conjunction with the Evangelical Church of God. Come and support the work of the church here, where the population is 90% Muslim.

HOS is run by missionaries Roland and Gunta, who set up HOS with the aim of promoting sustainability in The Gambia and breaking poverty through the education and up-skilling of young people.

THE PROJECT:

HOS runs a skills training centre for young adults within and from outside the ECG church. Overall, 2/3 of students are Christians. Departments include: Bakery training (which now delivers to local hotels and the airport!), metal work, mechanics, electrical skills and painting.

Currently, students are being housed off-site in local Muslim compounds and are facing security issues; girls are being threatened, their faith is weakening and students that have converted from Islam are vulnerable to persecution.

You’ll continue work started by team 1 in 2019, building male and female dormitories onsite at HOS to bring students into safe and secure accommodation whilst they complete their studies.

OTHER PROJECTS YOU’LL VISIT AND SUPPORT:

GOVI – Government Organisation of Visual Impaired

Giving blind and visually impaired children and adults the gift of dignity and independence in education. The centre supports adults and children in school with tools and resources to aid their education.

DOWNTIME

You’ll spend a couple of days at Abca’s Creek Lodge, a fantastic place for those who would like to experience the traditional way of living and also see the amazing nature of the inlands. You may like to include a canoe or boat trip, a bike tour or a nature walk. Come and also see the Tanji bird reserve.

Important! Please note, anyone with a peanut or fish allergy is not suitable for this trip as we are unable to separate food to accommodate this due to local cooking methods.

Accommodation

You'll stay at Fatou’s Lodge in Tanji, which comprises of 7 rooms altogether, which are singles or shared, depending on the size of the team and number of couples/singles and gender mix. There is one room which can hold up to 4 people, which would be idea for a family group.

All rooms are ensuite equipped with mosquito nets and are very clean. Towels and toilet tissue are provided, though hot showers may or may not be available. You must not drink the water.

Available extras:

  • Massages
  • Clothes washing

Orientation and reunion days

Each mission team has an orientation day held in the UK prior to their trip. This gives you the opportunity to meet your fellow team members as well as some or all of the country staff team. The day aims to fully prepare you for your trip, equipping you with all of the information you need and giving you the chance to ask any questions. Lunch and refreshments are provided. The date of orientation for this team is: 18 January 2020.

Your trip contribution also includes a UK reunion day once you have returned home after your mission trip. This is an opportunity to reconvene with your team and look back on some of the highlights and memories of the two weeks. Feedback from previous volunteers has taught us that this reunion is also important to help teams reflect and digest what they’ve seen and experienced as well as understand how it has affected them. We’ll also aim to help you ensure that your two-week mission makes a lasting difference in your life. Lunch and refreshments are provided. The date of reunion for this team is: 16 May 2020.
