Kumi Team 3

Breaking poverty through education

Kumi in Eastern Uganda will give you a taste of the ‘real Africa’. The colours are bright, the welcomes are big, the wildlife is jaw-dropping and the scenery is breath-taking. However, underneath that traditional view, the need is significant. Half of Kumi is under the age of 15 and there aren’t enough facilities for every child to receive education.

We’ve worked with partners here for many years, supporting the need for additional classrooms and further educational facilities to support the growing class sizes. Education is the key to breaking poverty and we would love you to come and join us in friendship with the local community to support their efforts to improve the outlook for their children and future generations.

The Projects

Partner – Kumi Primary School

Our host in Kumi is the PAG (Pentecostal Assemblies of God) Church. We are renovating an Old and unusable classroom block at Kumi Primary School.

In 2022 Mission Direct moved to work at Kumi Primary School. This is a State Primary School which was founded by Missionaries at St Stephen’s Church in 1926. Some of the original buildings are still in use together with additional classrooms from 1980’s which is when it was handed over to the Municipality. There are over 1,200 children at the school, and this will double over the next ten years. Whilst it has 17 classrooms 7 of these were occupied as teacher’s homes and all are in poor condition. The 1926 classrooms are surprisingly basically strong, but they have large and low windows which makes them fairly unusable in poor weather as the wind and rain penetrate through these and parts of the roof. All the classrooms at the school are in poor condition. In 2022 we built four new homes for teachers, enabling the old classrooms they were living in to be released. Our project in 2023 will be to renovate the old classrooms to make them fit for purpose. This is a major project involving a new roof, strengthening the walls, new floors windows and doors and the renewal of all finishes.

Rest and Relaxation

At the end of your time in country, you will stay at Red Chilli Camp in Murchison Falls National Park for a wonderful safari and some well-deserved downtime.
