Malawi Zomba

Giving the gift of education

Malawi is one of Africa’s smallest and most beautiful countries. It really is a magical destination. The nation is landlocked, situated on the eastern side of Africa and surrounded by Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania. The spectacular Lake Malawi, “discovered” by David Livingstone 150 years ago, is Malawi’s most famous asset.

Please note that the trip dates may vary a day either way due to flight availability.

The Projects

Green Community Project in Zomba, Malawi

Mission Direct is pleased to continue its partnership with Mbedza in Zomba, supporting a community-led initiative focused on environmental sustainability and practical development.

In 2027, teams will contribute to the development of a green kitchen project designed to improve community cooking facilities while promoting more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. The aim is to reduce environmental impact, improve efficiency in food preparation and support healthier, more sustainable ways of living for local families.

Working alongside local partners, the team will assist with practical construction and improvement work that supports the wider environmental goals of the project. This includes helping to develop infrastructure that encourages more efficient and sustainable approaches to daily community life.

Alongside the practical work, team members will engage with the local community, learn from Mbedza’s ongoing work in the region and support initiatives that are locally led and focused on long-term sustainability.

This is practical service with a clear environmental focus, helping to support a healthier and more sustainable future for families in Zomba.

Rest and Relaxation

It’s not all work! During your stay we will ensure that we take time out to relax and see the local countryside. Locally there are the botanical gardens, William falls, and Zomba plateau. Within an hour’s drive there is Mount Mulanje to climb, a tea plantation to visit, whilst in the opposite direction Liwonde National Park is just over an hour's drive away. Lake Malawi is about half a day's drive away, but well worth a visit, for the spectacular sunsets over the lake. At the time of publishing we cannot guarantee what visits, activities and R&R may be possible; so whilst the look and feel of the trip will be similar to those previously the exact shape may be a bit different.
